Music Video and Radio Song for Burkina Faso COVID-19 Response Health Care Workers

December 2020. Breakthrough ACTION worked with the Burkina Faso/USAID Mission and the Burkina Faso Ministry of Health to produce a music video for health care workers. The music video featured well-known Burkinabe musicians thanking health care workers for their courage in confronting COVID-19 and honoring the health care workers who have lost their lives due to the pandemic. It aired in French nationwide on the most popular television stations. The music video has also been released as a standalone song that was broadcast on popular radio stations across the country.

COVID Behaviors Dashboard: Updated Data Show Omicron Trends

Global Omicron cases have exploded since the COVID-19 variant was first reported to the World Health Organization on November 24. The most recent data from the COVID Behaviors Dashboard reflects that trend: the highest percentage of respondents in multiple countries are reporting positive test results since the dashboard went live in May of 2021.

Reported positivity rates have jumped at least 10 percentage points in South Africa, Mozambique, Puerto Rico, and many other countries in the past month.
In the November 16-30 data collection period for South Africa, 7% of tests were positive. In the most recent December period, that number rose to 37%, more than a four-fold increase.

Other insights from the latest data collection period (Dec 16-31):

20% of unvaccinated health workers in Japan are now reporting that they will definitely get vaccinated, up from only 3% in early December
90% of South African respondents reported that they have worn a mask all or most of the time, but only 70% believe that all or most other people are wearing masks
Respondents in Nigeria have consistently reported a lack of vaccine appointments as the top barrier to vaccination (32% indicating)

TV Spots on Cross-Cutting COVID-19 and Ebola Prevention Behaviors (Mali)

In early 2021, Mali was faced both with the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the challenge of an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in neighboring Guinea. The Breakthrough ACTION project, in collaboration with the National Communication Sub Commission of the COVID-19 Crisis Committee, developed a French and Bambara TV spot with the theme of “Une Pierre, Deux Coups” (Two birds, one stone) to reinforce key behaviors that help to prevent the transmission of both COVID-19 and Ebola. These aired nationally while the EVD response effort was active.

Mali COVID-19 Vaccine Frequently Asked Questions series

This FAQ series, available in French, was developed by Breakthrough ACTION Mali in collaboration with the National Communication Sub-Commission of the COVID-19 Crisis Committee. The series was distributed across a range of partners as part of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in 2021. Content was developed in collaboration with all partners and adapts key information and messages of the World Health Organization’s COVID Vaccine FAQs and detailed SAGE recommendations to the context of Mali’s vaccine campaign, its vaccine eligible populations and available vaccine types.

Research brief: Barriers to COVID-19 prevention behaviors in Côte d’Ivoire

This research brief, available in both English and French, summarizes the results of a qualitative study examining barriers to a range of COVID-19 prevention behaviors early on in the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2020.

The study included individual interviews (IDIs) with COVID-19 survivors, individuals who lost a family member to the disease, and health workers. Focus group discussions (FGDs) were also conducted with members of the general population to explore social norms and community perceptions related to COVID-19.

Social distancing and mask-wearing amongst young people;
Observance of prevention measures in places of worship (mosques; Catholic and evangelical churches)
Reintegration of those recovered from COVID-19 into communities and avoidance of stigma
COVID-19 Considerations for those seeking routine HIV and malaria-related services or involved in implementing routine activities for prevention of HIV/malaria

In-depth qualitative research conducted by the project informed interventions and messaging to address COVID-19 related stigma.
