COVID-19 and Meta: Social and Behavioral Change Communication Learnings from 20 Countries

Throughout 2021, CARE launched 45 locally-led campaigns in 20 countries applying lessons learned during an eight-week training series with Meta. In the second half of 2021, participating countries built on their learnings from their first campaigns and attempted to answer new questions that arose all while creating culturally appropriate messaging to encourage the adoption of preventative behaviors and/or to build trust in the vaccine, even if it wasn’t yet available.

The Alerta Guatemala campaign is a COVID-19 prevention campaign from the Breakthrough ACTION Guatemala team. The campaign emphasizes that COVID-19 is still contagious and dangerous even if one has been vaccinated or previously infected. The prevention methods of distancing, masking and hand washing are highlighted, encouraging people to not let their guard down against COVID-19. The campaign materials include a TV spot, radio spots, print materials and digital/social media (intagram and facebook) materials in Spanish. The radio spots are also in the indigenous languages of Mam, Kaqchikel, Kiche, Q’Anjob’Al, and Keqchi. This campaign was aimed at the general public. Guide to Prevention and Control of COVID-19 in Services of Health

The Coronavirus topic was included in the Guide for the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 in Health Services of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance of Guatemala.

To facilitate dissemination, a brochure and poster were produced. In addition, workshops were held with staff from the MOH and the municipalities of Nebaj, Chajul, Nebaj and Sacapulas in Quiché.

The radio spots remind the population that it is the responsibility of all Guatemalans to perform key prevention behaviors (Wash your hands, Maintain physical distancing, and Wear a mask) at critical moments of elevated risk such as visiting family or friends, going to work, or going do daily errands.

The slogan of the campaign is “Si Toca Salir, Toca Cuidarse”.

Accede a datos actuales de comportamientos de COVID-19 de Guatemala. El panel ayuda a comprender las causas de las actitudes de las personas en relación con la vacunación contra el COVID-19, uso de mascarilla, distanciamiento físico y otras medidas preventivas vinculadas con el COVID-19. Su finalidad es brindar insumos e información verídica que permitan desarrollar estrategias para Cambio Social y de Comportamiento (CSC).

La red de comunicación COVID-19 (CCN) se convirtió para nosotros en una fuente de consulta confiable, veraz, oportuna y clara sobre la enfermedad y cómo abordarla con los distintos grupos objetivos. También, se constituyó en un espacio importante donde podemos compartir mensajes y materiales.

Gracias a la información disponible en el CCN, en Guatemala hemos elaborado kits informativos sobre el COVID-19, que contienen preguntas y respuestas frecuentes sobre la enfermedad y la vacuna, guías de comunicación interpersonal que ofrecen consejos claves para apoyar al prestador de salud en su orientación e interacción con los usuarios de los servicios que tienen dudas sobre la vacunación, entre otros materiales.

Asimismo, hemos utilizado informes técnicos relacionados con comunicación sobre las vacunas contra el COVID-19, establecimiento y gestión de líneas de atención telefónica, mensajes en campañas de comunicación, entre otros, para la elaboración de los distintos materiales tanto en idioma español como en los idiomas mayas predominantes en el país.
