      Breakthrough ACTION Ethiopia COVID-19 Campaign

Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) had prioritized  Ethiopia, among 13 African countries, as the most vulnerable countries for importation of COVID-19. A recent Lancet publication reiterated this by describing Ethiopia as a highly vulnerable country with substantially larger population potential exposed yet with moderate capacity to contain the spread of the infection.

Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) is an essential component of health emergency readiness and response activities. The Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI) has been proactively working on emergency readiness and response activities on COVID-19 since late January 2020. The Emergency Operation Center (EOC), housed in EPHI and usually activated during public health emergencies in the country, started its work by establishing a technical working group (TWG) on RCCE comprised of different stakeholders and health development partners.

Breakthrough ACTION Ethiopia is working closely with EPHI on COVID-19. To date, efforts have included technical assistance, training, tool development, and risk communication materials design, and logistical support to EPHI. The scope also includes focused support to the RCCE TWG, coordination on preparedness and response activities among several implementing partners, and training for Ethiopian Airlines flight and ground crew, as well as urban health extension workers and religious leaders.

Thus far, the project has produced the following materials:

      • PSAs for  Amhara, Central, Oromia, SNNPR and Tigray:
        • Prevention methods
        • Misconceptions
        • Avoiding panic
        • Social distancing
        • Stigma

          Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria COVID-19 Campaign

Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) had prioritized 13 African countries including Nigeria as the most vulnerable countries for importation of COVID-19.

Since the confirmation of an index case in the country, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and WHO commenced the coordination of a response and preparedness plan. One of the components of the plan is Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) with an Incident Action Plan (IAP), which articulates communication objectives and illustrative activities proposed by the NCDC. Through partnership and collaboration, Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria will work to support the Nigerian Government and RCCE country-level pillar leadership (currently the Health promotion division of the FMoH, NCDC, WHO and UNICEF) with technical assistance to adapt and contextualize plans, tools, templates, and materials to support the preparedness and/or response activities required by Nigeria.

          Activities/ materials include:

          Audio spots:

10 (60secs) audio spots on self-isolation for international travelers. In these spots (available in Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Pidgin, and English)  two men/ two women discuss having just returned from travel and the need to stay self-isolated.

SBCC for Emergency Preparedness Implementation Kit

The purpose of this I-Kit is to provide a set of key considerations for SBCC activities in emergency situations.

This I-Kit provides essential information and tools for responding to an outbreak using an SBCC approach. It presents a series of nine units, each accompanied by exercise worksheets to help link the SBCC theory to practice.

Each unit builds on the one prior, and they all combine to provide key information for developing an SBCC strategy. It is not essential, however, to work through the I-Kit from start to finish. Users can choose to focus on specific aspects for which they need support in their emergency communication response. The nine units and corresponding worksheets are outlined in the I-Kit Site Navigator.

The worksheets in each section are typically followed by a completed example. The completed examples will likely include information about an emergency that, during an actual event, might not be immediately available. This was done to illustrate the full range of information to inform a strategic communication response.

This kit is also available in Portuguese.
