        Masked Indian Comic Superhero Fights COVID-19 Fear

        India’s first female comic superhero Priya, a gang-rape survivor who earlier campaigned against rape, acid attack and sex trafficking, is back to fight disinformation around the COVID-19 pandemic.

        In Priya’s Mask, due to be launched on 2 December, the comic crusader joins hands with Jiya, the “Burka Avenger”, a popular character from a Pakistani cartoon show, as the two go about trying to tackle the pandemic – and also the “infodemic”, a major proliferation in fake news surrounding the coronavirus.

        With more than 9.4 million infections and 137,000 deaths, India has the second highest caseload globally. A strict nationwide lockdown that was imposed on 21 March delayed the spread for a while, but infections grew rapidly – and continue to do so – since restrictions were relaxed.

        A major challenge in India’s fight against COVID-19 has been the false and misleading information around the pandemic, which is often shared quickly. Through this campaign, the creators wanted to challenge misinformation, dispel fear, and support the health workers and others at the forefront of the fight against the virus.

                The COVID-19 course series is part of the COVID-19 Digital Classroom initiative. These courses are primarily designed for community-based health workers who practice in low- and middle-income countries. It covers a range of topics on COVID-19, including basic information on the virus and how to mitigate its public health effects. The course is designed to synthesize the most important, high-level information on COVID-19 from a variety of well-respected resources in a practical way. Many of the resources are cited for your reference and include documents and guidelines from the World Health Organization, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the UN, and many other reliable sources. While community-based health workers are the primary audience for this course series, the topics covered are relevant for everyone involved in responding to this pandemic worldwide.

                It is important to note that while these courses provide a generalized overview of COVID-19 and information on how to contain the spread of the disease, they cannot account for everything, especially as we are still learning day-to-day about the virus and its impact on our health and society.                     This document provides guidance to decision makers, public and child health professionals to inform policy on the use of masks for children in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It does not address the use of masks for adults working with children or parents/guardians or the use of masks for children in health-care settings. This interim guidance will be revised and updated as new evidence emerges.

                    This guidance provides specific considerations for the use of non-medical masks, also known as fabric masks, by children as a means for source control in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The document is an annex to the WHO’s Advice on the use of masks in the context of COVID-191 in which further details on fabric masks can be found. This annex also advises the use of medical masks for children under certain conditions. For the purposes of this guidance, children are defined as anyone below the age of 18 years.
