COVID-19 and Meta: Social and Behavioral Change Communication Learnings from 20 Countries

Throughout 2021, CARE launched 45 locally-led campaigns in 20 countries applying lessons learned during an eight-week training series with Meta. In the second half of 2021, participating countries built on their learnings from their first campaigns and attempted to answer new questions that arose all while creating culturally appropriate messaging to encourage the adoption of preventative behaviors and/or to build trust in the vaccine, even if it wasn’t yet available.

How South Sudan Beat the Odds to Delivery COVID Vaccines

Led by community members like CARE’s Health & Nutrition Coordinator Dr. Emmanuel Ojwang and CARE’s Health and Nutrition Manager Dr. Kawa Tong, South Sudan solicited investments in the South Sudanese healthcare system after those 132,000 life-saving doses went to waste in May. They quickly secured surge funding from CARE’s Fast & Fair Campaign, South Sudan’s Health Pool Fund, UNHCR, and UNICEF, and were able to change the story by the time the next round of doses arrived in July.

Faith Leadership and Vaccine Hesitancy Reduction

In July, CARE USA ran a series of Facebook ads to test which messengers – healthcare providers, celebrities, or faith leaders – would drive more vaccine acceptance. We were surprised to learn that the faith leaders outperformed the other two messengers, particularly since reports from other sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that healthcare providers showed the best results.
