Behavioral Sciences Tips for Physical Distancing

This brief includes some concrete tips for how local and national governments and other institutions can use behavioral design to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in communities in low and middle-income countries around the world while facilitating social cohesion and the provision of essential services.

These include:

Make it easier for people to practice physical distancing in their communities by reshaping their environments.
Redesign how healthcare and other public services are delivered to facilitate physical distancing while ensuring essential service provision.
Lower the costs, both social and financial, associated with physical distancing.
Create new benefits and incentives to make physical distancing less painful and more sustainable for people to practice over time

Minimum Standards for Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies

The Minimum Standards comprise a set of 18 inter-connected standards that draw upon UNFPA’s comparative advantage and global expertise and are based on international best practice.

The Standards speak to UNFPA’s mandate to coordinate GBV prevention and response in emergencies as co-lead with UNICEF of the Area of Responsibility of the Global Protection Cluster. Working in coordination with other UN agencies and international organizations, UNFPA can support national authorities and partners to build and strengthen existing health and protection systems. Contained in the Standards are tools to address the bottlenecks that prevent the prioritization of GBV prevention and response in emergencies, and guidance on working in partnership with survivors and members of the crisis-affected population to build individual and community resilience.

Coronavirus in Sub-Saharan Africa How Africans in 12 Nations are Responding to the COVID-19 Outbreak

GeoPoll conducted a remote study in 12 countries in sub-Saharan Africa on the effects coronavirus is already having on people throughout the region. The impact of the virus will have broad-reaching implications across all sectors, and while we could not cover every relevant topic in this study, we sought to use our experience conducting research for both international development groups and the consumer sector to include a wide range of topics.

Areas that are covered in this study include:

Biggest concerns and perceptions of risk surrounding coronavirus
Preventative measures such as social distancing and handwashing practices
Changes in food market operability and food security
Changes in consumer habits, including purchasing of food and nonessential items
Levels of trust in governments and the commercial sector
Information sources on COVID-19 and changes in media consumption

Global Rapid Gender Analysis for COVID-19

This report is for humanitarians working in fragile contexts that are likely to be affected by the COVID-19 crisis. It is organised around broad themes and areas of focus of particular importance to those whose programming advances gender equality and reduces gender inequalities.

The report seeks to deepen the current gender analysis available by encompassing learning from global gender data available for the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Systematic Literature Review on the Spread of Health-related Misinformation on Social Media

In order to uncover the current evidence and better understand the mechanism of misinformation spread, the authors report a systematic review of the nature and potential drivers of health-related misinformation.

A total of 57 articles were included for full-text analysis. Overall, they observed an increasing trend in published articles on health-related misinformation and the role of social media in its propagation. The most extensively studied topics involving misinformation relate to vaccination,Ebola and Zika Virus, although others, such as nutrition, cancer, fluoridation of water and smoking also featured. Studies adopted theoretical frameworks from psychology and network science, while co-citation analysis revealed potential for greater collaboration across fields.

Tips for Engaging Communities during COVID-19 in Low-Resource Settings, Remotely and In-Person

Measures to Ensure the Continuity of the Response to Malaria in the Americas during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The PAHO Regional Malaria Program is aware of the imminent negative impact that the present COVID-19 pandemic is causing in the countries and their health systems, and consequently, in the fight against malaria in the countries of the Americas; considers that it is essential to guide national authorities; and draws attention to the main measures to be taken to maintain the continuity of actions against malaria, while protecting the health of healthcare workers and in line with national provisions for response to COVID-19. Malaria-specific guidance on the response to COVID-19 has been developed by WHO1 and is the main reference for this document.

This material is subject to updates by WHO and PAHO on malaria and on the COVID-19 response.
