Building Trust and Empathy for Healthcare Workers: Lessons Learned Videos

Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria built the capacity of healthcare service providers in Nigeria using the “Building Trust and Empathy Around COVID-19: A Client-Centred Communication Approach”, which promotes positive client-provider interactions that ensure healthcare workers have the tools and capacity to address vaccine hesitancy (among themselves and with their clients) and encourage COVID-19 prevention, testing, and vaccination, and take care of themselves in high-stress situations such as the one COVID-19 presented.

5 Inspiring Covid-19 Marketing Campaigns

Now that the Covid-19 storm has mostly raged itself out it can be hard to remember how much was changed during that time.

During periods of lockdown, consumer circumstances and buying habits changed and brands were forced to change their operational approach as well as their messaging in response. Many experts saw this as a time for companies to reassess their brand strategy – as we looked at in our podcast episode on insights into how brands were dealing with the pandemic.

Despite being a highly creative industry, marketing isn’t always as innovative or risk-averse as you might believe. Many brands opted to remain conservative when it came to their campaigns for fear of tarnishing their reputation. For many, the pandemic was a time to pivot, to reinvent, to inspire, and to offer a viable solution to what was a very pressing problem.

“KwentoSerye” – an online conversation with teens!

Breakthrough ACTION Philippines launches an online conversation program with teens called “KwentoSerye” (story series). This program aims to be a safe space for teens to talk about their health and well-being. The first two episodes that premiered on the I Choose #MalayaAkongMaging Facebook page focused on the teens’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The conversations revolved around how teens felt during the lockdown and when the COVID-19 vaccines for them were finally available. The teens shared how the pandemic has affected their mental health as well. A mental health expert from InTouch Community Services was invited to share tips on how the teens can take care of their mental health.

Mental Health GAP Intervention Guide

The ‘mhGAP Intervention Guide (mhGAP-IG) for mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) disorders in non-specialist health settings’ is for use by doctors, nurses, other health workers as well as health planners and managers. The Intervention Guide presents the integrated management of priority MNS conditions using algorithms for clinical decision making. Additionally, it comprises a streamlined and simplified clinical assessment that includes an algorithm for follow-up; modules on Essential Care and Practice, Psychoses, Child and Adolescent Mental and Behavioural Disorders and Disorders due to Substance Use.

SOP for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Call Center

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been developed by Breakthrough ACTION to ensure a standardized service mechanism/protocol for the service providers at the Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) helplines, call centers, and telepsychology centers throughout the country.

Mental Health Booklet for Teens

Across the world, teens reported increased anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. This booklet was designed by Breakthrough ACTION Philippines for Filipino teens in response to their stated need for mental health support and resources. Teens were involved in the content selection and design, and it was reviewed by several leading Filipino mental health therapists/practitioners who work with teens.     Improving Mental Health Services in Bangladesh Through the Mental Health Gap Action Plan

    In Bangladesh, mental health challenges remain unmet due to a lack of awareness, a shortage of mental health professionals and various facilities. To address the widening gap between mental health needs and the availability of mental health care professionals, Dr. Helal Uddin Ahmed, Assistant Professor of Child Adolescent and Family Psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health worked with Breakthrough ACTION to develop a standard operating procedure for mental health and psychological support call centers. In March 2022, in consultation with the Non-Communicable Disease Control and the National Institute of Mental Health, Breakthrough ACTION organized training sessions on the mental health gap action program and the standard operating procedure, to equip doctors and counselors with mental health counseling, screening, and management skills, ensuring improved quality of mental health services that are affordable and accessible to people.

      How is COVID-19 affecting parents’ mental health

      Being a parent is a daily challenge and faced with the realities of COVID 19, social distancing and self-quarantine, it may be a struggle. For parents, the best way to help their children is to firstly take care of themselves.

      Self-care during these times is not selfish because it enables the caregivers to be there for their children as a stable, calm and soothing parent. This way, parents will also be able to better understand their children and help them feel reassured, relaxed and focused.
