This brief offers examples which demonstrate the emerging need for expertise in designing government services for chronic scarcity as society adapts to a new way of life in light of COVID-19.

Government agencies serving their residents during the COVID-19 pandemic have a number of tools at their disposal: public funding, talented and committed staff, connections to goods and services from local organizations, and valuable know-how. This brief offers three recommendations to deal with the situation.

    Coronavirus in Sub-Saharan Africa How Africans in 12 Nations are Responding to the COVID-19 Outbreak

    GeoPoll conducted a remote study in 12 countries in sub-Saharan Africa on the effects coronavirus is already having on people throughout the region. The impact of the virus will have broad-reaching implications across all sectors, and while we could not cover every relevant topic in this study, we sought to use our experience conducting research for both international development groups and the consumer sector to include a wide range of topics.

    Areas that are covered in this study include:

    • Biggest concerns and perceptions of risk surrounding coronavirus
    • Preventative measures such as social distancing and handwashing practices
    • Changes in food market operability and food security
    • Changes in consumer habits, including purchasing of food and nonessential items
    • Levels of trust in governments and the commercial sector
    • Information sources on COVID-19 and changes in media consumption

        SBCC for Emergency Preparedness Implementation Kit

        The purpose of this I-Kit is to provide a set of key considerations for SBCC activities in emergency situations.

        This I-Kit provides essential information and tools for responding to an outbreak using an SBCC approach. It presents a series of nine units, each accompanied by exercise worksheets to help link the SBCC theory to practice.

        Each unit builds on the one prior, and they all combine to provide key information for developing an SBCC strategy. It is not essential, however, to work through the I-Kit from start to finish. Users can choose to focus on specific aspects for which they need support in their emergency communication response. The nine units and corresponding worksheets are outlined in the I-Kit Site Navigator.

        The worksheets in each section are typically followed by a completed example. The completed examples will likely include information about an emergency that, during an actual event, might not be immediately available. This was done to illustrate the full range of information to inform a strategic communication response.

        This kit is also available in Portuguese.

        Global Health Network COVID-19 Outbreak Knowledge Hub

        Implementing research within the COVID-19 pandemic is critical, both for understanding how to combat this disease, but also to learn for potential future outbreaks. The ability to undertake research should be equitable across the globe and we need to engage in all types of studies across all settings and care contexts.

        The aim of this hub is to ensure that research teams can find the support, tools, resources and guidance that they need to aid their studies during this rapidly evolving situation. Using shared and open protocols and tools can raise research standards and enable easier and better data sharing.
