Priorities for COVID-19 Research Response and Preparedness in Low-resource Settings

COVID-19 poses particular threats in low-resource settings, which typically have underfunded health-care systems and insufficient influence on the global health research agenda.

Strengthening research capacity must be embedded in research funding across LMICs to support the COVID-19 response now and to prepare to manage future infectious disease threats effectively. Such programmes need to be informed by local contexts and be driven by regionally and nationally identified priorities. Lessons learned in LMICs have global relevance and require global attention.

Increased research coordination is needed to improve the coherence of the research response affecting LMICs.

Masked Indian Comic Superhero Fights COVID-19 Fear

India’s first female comic superhero Priya, a gang-rape survivor who earlier campaigned against rape, acid attack and sex trafficking, is back to fight disinformation around the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Priya’s Mask, due to be launched on 2 December, the comic crusader joins hands with Jiya, the “Burka Avenger”, a popular character from a Pakistani cartoon show, as the two go about trying to tackle the pandemic – and also the “infodemic”, a major proliferation in fake news surrounding the coronavirus.

With more than 9.4 million infections and 137,000 deaths, India has the second highest caseload globally. A strict nationwide lockdown that was imposed on 21 March delayed the spread for a while, but infections grew rapidly – and continue to do so – since restrictions were relaxed.

A major challenge in India’s fight against COVID-19 has been the false and misleading information around the pandemic, which is often shared quickly. Through this campaign, the creators wanted to challenge misinformation, dispel fear, and support the health workers and others at the forefront of the fight against the virus.

An Approach for Monitoring and Evaluating Community Mitigation Strategies for COVID-19

This document describes the approach of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s approach to evaluating community mitigation strategies and provides overarching considerations to support state, territorial, or local health departments, tribal health organizations, or others in monitoring and evaluating COVID-19 community mitigation strategies, including a logic model, suggested monitoring and evaluation questions, and potential data sources.

The approach considers outcomes that minimize COVID-19 morbidity and associated mortality, effects of community mitigation strategies on long-standing health disparities and social determinants of health, and how communities thrive socially, emotionally, and economically.

Adapting Evaluation Designs in Times of COVID-19 (Coronavirus): Four Questions to Guide Decisions

This is a framework organized around four questions to address the ethical, conceptual, and methodological challenges that are affecting programmatic evaluation work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

                The questions are:

                • Should you adapt your evaluation questions and scope?
                • Can you improve what remains feasible?
                • Can you find ways around what is infeasible?
                • Can you tap into alternative sources of evidence?
