Behavioural Science to Combat Mis- and Disinformation

January 18, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am EST

UN Innovation Network

The dissemination of false information, either without deliberate intent (misinformation) or with malicious intention (disinformation), is a growing global issue which can lead to harmful consequences in public discourse. Behavioural science can be applied to combat misinformation by encouraging users to verify the information and sources and discouraging misinformation sharing.

To highlight the potential of Behavioural Science to Combat Mis- and Disinformation, the UN Behavioural Science Group is hosting a public event on Tuesday, 18th January 2022 at 9am ET. The event will:

  • Highlight the risks associated with mis- and disinformation;
  • Outline how behavioural science can be applied to combat mis- and disinformation;
  • Showcase how different actors are already using it; and
  • Explore the role the UN and other partners should play to address the spread of mis- and disinformation.

The event will feature a keynote from UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming and a panel discussion with representatives from the United Nations, Government and Academia.
