Home-Based Care Reference Guide for COVID-19

This guide provides recommendations to nonprofits, Red Cross Red Crescent network and community organizations who are designing programs and materials in response to COVID-19 in low- and middle-income countries.

The working group designed it as a supplemental tool for organizations working specifically with community health workers (CHWs) (including trained community health volunteers) as they are reaching households, however the content can be adapted for other purposes.

This guide focuses on three main areas: how to support a person whose condition warrants home care because of non-severe symptoms and home care is recommended by local jurisdictions; how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the home; and how to provide emotional support to family members. While this manual provides information on danger signs of COVID-19, it should not be used as a guide for when and how a person who has COVID-19 (or its symptoms) should seek medical care. All content adapted to different countries should reflect local policy guidelines and recommendations.

COVID-19 Guide for Community Health Workers

Community health workers (CHWs) serve as a very important direct link between patients, communities and health services. As trusted on-the-ground support to community members, they therefore expand access to essential healthcare information as well as available treatment and prevention programmes.

This course book provides appropriate, cost-effective, and sustainable targeted learning for the large numbers of emerging community health workers in South Africa.

This online book includes these chapters:

          1. Introduction to COVID-19
          2. Diagnosing and managing COVID-19
          3. How to prevent the spread of COVID-19
          4. Protecting yourself from COVID-19

These chapters have been successfully used as part of the Skills to Care learning programme for the Lukhanji Municipality and Sarah Baartman District Municipality in the Eastern Cape, funded by the Small Projects Foundation.

People Are Going off PrEP in the COVID-19 Era Because They’re Not Having Sex

The physical distancing being practiced by millions all over the world has had an interesting side effect – many people who were taking PrEP (pre-exposure prophylactics) to avoid contracting HIV have stopped taking their daily doses since they do not plan to have sexual contact for the foreseeable future.

This article reviews some recent studies about this trend and how the sexually active gay and heterosexual communities are responding to COVID-19.

DisasterReady.org [www.disasterready.org], a signature program of the Cornerstone OnDemand Foundation, is an open online learning community built to empower humanitarians working in relief and development.

In order to support the workforce of the non-profit sector and NGOs during the current pandemic, they have created a new collection of short, engaging resources grouped in easy-to-navigate playlists, with content from top training providers (such as the Konterra Group, EJ4 or for French-speakers Institut Bioforce) and health specialists (like WHO and CDC). These playlists offer content to help everyone work safely, and to promote infection prevention, preparedness, and well-being during this pandemic.
